Artist Statement

Hello, my name is Wendy Mitchell! I started my business in 2005 after graduating from RIT with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Professional Photographic Illustration, and have photographed over 450 weddings since – mostly in the greater Buffalo area, several handfuls in Rochester and the Finger Lakes, two in the Thousand Islands, and one in New Jersey! I’ve shot 3-day celebrations with upwards of 375 guests and I’ve done three weddings so small that I had to sign as the official witness on the marriage license.

After 20 years and being through the doors of so many homes, hotels, salons, churches, restaurants, and reception venues, one thing became clear to me a couple of years ago: I still love photography, and I still love weddings, but I am no longer at home in the midst of large, ongoing parties where I start the day at 10am and the dancefloor is packed when I’m heading out at 10pm.

Beginning in 2026, I am actively and intentionally limiting my bookings to only small and tiny weddings. I am also very open to short-notice weddings, as long as I’m available. My commitment to high quality, beautiful documentary-style photography will remain unchanged. I will ensure that your wedding gets the same thoughtful coverage that I’ve always provided whether you book me for two hours or five, whether you book me one week in advance or eight months. Please review my Pricing page for information on the ways in which my photography can best suit your wedding.

– A little about me personally: I recently moved to Rochester NY (after living in the greater Buffalo area for the past 20 years) because my son started his Mechanical Engineering degree at… RIT. Life really has come full circle. We now live less than 3 miles from the apartment where my husband and I lived when we got married (when I was still a student at RIT!) and we plan to live here until our son finishes his degree.
– We love to travel to US National Parks and we have been to 30 of the 63 US National Park sites (all in the contiguous US), as well as many of the National Park Service administered sites such as Canaveral National Seashore, the San Antonio Missions, Cabrillo National Monument, and the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. We have patches and Junior Ranger badges – my husband and I started doing the Junior Ranger books ourselves when our son lost interest around age 14.
– I enjoy hiking and kayaking although I haven’t done either one enough the past two summers. I plan to change that in 2026!
– We have a dog named Hobbes and he is our special little guy. We got him from a rescue called Magic’s Mission Beagle & Hound Rescue in 2022 and now we can’t imagine our lives without him!
